root คือ รากศัพท์ หรือส่วนที่สื่อความหมายหลักของคำอาจอยู่ที่ตำแหน่งใดของคำก็ได้ ขอแบ่งรากศัพท์เป็น 2 ประเภท
1. รากศัพท์ที่มาจากภาษากรีกหรือละติน ประเภทนี้มักมี prefix หรือ suffix มาประกอบจึงจะเกิดเป็นคำที่มีความหมายในภาษาอังกฤษ เช่น
รากศัพท์ -vis- เราคงไม่เคยเห็นมันอยู่ลอยๆ
เป็นคำศัพท์ที่ใช้ในประโยคทั่วๆ ไป
-vis- เมื่อไปประกอบกับ prefix หรือ suffix ความหมายจะเกี่ยวกับการดู

การวิเคราะห์คำศัพท์
บางทีก็ทำให้เราเห็นที่มาของคำศัพท์นั้นชัดเจนขึ้นลองนึกถึงอาชีพ 2 อาชีพ waiter กับ secretary
คำว่า waiter ที่แปลว่า
พนักงานเสิร์ฟ เด็กๆ ดูตัวคำศัพท์ดีดี waiter มาจากคำว่า wait (รอคอย) แล้วเติม -er (suffix ที่เติมแล้วหมายถึงคน)
รวมกันเสร็จสรรพ คือ คนที่รอคอย นึกถึงพนักงานเสิร์ฟที่ยืนรอเราสั่งอาหาร

อุปสรรค (prefix) อุปสรรค (Prefix)
คือหน่วยที่เล็กที่สุดของความหมายในภาษา และ ไม่สามารถอยู่ลำพังได้ เป็นส่วนที่เติมหน้ารากศัพท์
(root or stem) เพื่อเพิ่มหรือเปลี่ยนความหมายของรากศัพท์นั้น
โดยจะไม่เปลี่ยนหน้าที่ของรากศัพท์ ดังนั้นคำที่เกิดขึ้นใหม่ส่วนใหญ่จะมีหน้าที่เหมือนเดิมแต่มีความหมายเพิ่มเติมหรือเปลี่ยนไป
